Understanding Gharib al-Qur'an: Classical Dictionaries of Qur'anic Vocabulary

What Is "Gharib al-Qur'an"?

Gharib means words in the Qur'an whose meaning has become obscure to modern readers; either because their usage is rare or because their meanings have shifted over centuries. Classical scholars produced entire libraries of works clarifying these terms.

The Essential Books

1) Mufradat Alfaz al-Qur'an: al-Raghib al-Isfahani (d. 502 AH)

The most famous Qur'anic dictionary. Arranges words alphabetically by root, then gives the semantic core, derivations, and specific Qur'anic usage.

2) Tafsir Gharib al-Qur'an: Ibn Qutayba (d. 276 AH)

An early, sura-by-sura work; practical for readers following the mushaf.

3) Ma'ani al-Qur'an: al-Farra' (d. 207 AH)

Combines linguistic and grammatical (i'rab) explanations for difficult Qur'anic verses.

4) Al-Wujuh wa'l-Naza'ir: Harun ibn Musa (d. 170 AH)

Deals with polysemy: words that carry different meanings in different Qur'anic verses (e.g., umma meaning community, religion, era, or exemplar).

A Five-Step Method

  1. Identify the difficult word.
  2. Check al-Raghib for the semantic core.
  3. Consult Lisan al-'Arab for poetic evidence.
  4. Read al-Tabari's tafsir for context.
  5. Parse the verse grammatically: most difficulty disappears once i'rab is settled. Try it with Seebawayh's AI grammar tool.
